Tables
Tables
on web pages are a mehod of organizing information. There are
columns which go up-and-down, and rows that go left-to-right.
Where a column and a row meet or intersect, is called a "cell."
Inside a cell can be test, numbers, web links, pictures, and
other items. Some tables have headers across the top row, making
it darker than the other cells visually, and adding more accessibility
for the screen reader. Not all tables have headers. Each
screen reader has its own unique key commands for web based tables.
There are some simple universal key commands which help navigate
web based tables for most screen readers. Hitting the letter "t"
will take you to the first table on a web page. Hitting "t" again
will take you to the next table. If you need to move backwards
through the tables on the web page, press and hold down the Shift key
and hit the letter "t." Your arrow keys is one universal method
to move through a table on a web page. Hitting the down arrow
takes you forward cell-by-cell. Hitting up arrow takes you
backward cell-by-cell. Press and hold down the Control and Alt
keys and hit the down arrow key to move down one cell, or Control Alt
up arrow to move up one cell--the up and down arrows all by themslves
move left and right, cell-by-cell. Hitting left arrow takes
through through the text or number in a cell letter-by-letter or
digit-by-digit. There are headings on this page to give you quick
access to the type of table you want to view. You can simple hit
the letter "t" to moe to the first table, but you will then need to hit
the up arrow to see what that table represents. It is suggested
that you hit the letter "h" followed by the letter "t," and then use
your arrow key commands to explore the table. Once again, your
screen reader will have its own unique key commands for web based
tables. At the end of this page is a "BACK" link which will take
you to the "Internet Lessons" web page.
NOTE:
Some tables are "static" meaning the information in the cells
does not change. Some tables are "dynamic" meaning the
information in the cells can change. A table for email addresses
does not generally change often, while a table with food and prices can
change weekly.
