Search Tips and Academic Research Links

Searching the internet can be a long and tiresome activity.  There are a number of search engines such as Google and Bing which are commonly known.  There are other area specific search engines for categories such as libraries.  Here are a few tips and some links to help you refine the methods you use to search for specific information on the internet.

Defining a word:  In the search box type "define ____" (without the quotes) to get an immediate definition for a word.

Translating a word:  In the search box type "translate ____ from English to ____" (without the quotes) to get an immediate translation of a word, or "translate ____ from Spanish to English" (without the quotes).

Math problem:  In the search box type "2 + 1 =" (without the quotes) and hit Enter to get the answer.

Narrowing a search:  Use quotation marks before and after what you want to search for to narrow down the search--do this in the search box.

Time:  Type the city and state followed by the word "time" (without the quotes) to get an immediate time for a city.

Weather:  Type a city and state followed by the word "weather" (without the quotes) to get immediate weather for a city.
