Exploring a Web Page with Key Commands
Each
new web page is a mystery to the screen reader user. There are
very slow ways to explore a web page such as "read all," down arrowing
or even tabbing. Time is lost, and not all content is read.
Here are some simple key commands for exploring a web page.
You can hit any one of these keys to move down the page, or press
and hold down the Shift key to move up the web page.
u means unvisited link
v means visited link
k means any link
b means button
e
can mean edit or search box (usually for a search or a form) If
you are filling out a form you may need to have your screen reader to
into "Forms Mode."
l means list
h means heading
p can mean paragraph
n can mean next text
c means combo box (such as a drop down list of the days of the week, states, etc.)
r means radio button
g can mean graphic
x can mean check box
t means table
There
are many keys for exploring a web page. Some web pages will have
items that may look like a button, but are actually links. Some
buttons do not say what they are. You may need to have someone
tell you what the button is, and then use your screen reader to create
a graphic label for that button.
